Filmscreening “If revolution was sickness” (EN/DE), Luru Kino, Spinnerei
These four short films first historicize then problematize the presence of Southeast Asian in diverse (post)socialist contexts. A reportage on Cambodians in GDR, »Bruderhilfe« (Nico Mesterharm, 2020) gives insight into the complicated history of Southeast Asia mainland since the end of the French colonial era. At the same time, many contract workers from Vietnam arrived in GDR and began their legendary presence, illustrated in »Sorge 87« (Thanh Nguyen Phuong, 2020) via narration of the older generation. This intergenerational complexity and gaps in translation unfolds in »Love, Dad« (Diana Cam Van Nguyen, 2021), a love letter of a Vietnamese-Czech illustrator. The program concludes with a performative K‑pop dance and music in spectacle of revolutionary poetics of Vietnamese-Polish diaspora, if not just mere spectacle, in »If revolution is a sickness« (Diane Severin Nguyen, 2021).
The curator Sarnt Utamachote will host a Q&A with Thanh Nguyen Phuong on postmigrant cinema.
Films with English subtitles, Q&A in German.
