«The Mayakovsky Readings case» is one of the most horrifying examples of police brutality in Russia after the outbreak of full-scale war in Ukraine.

The defendants in this case are Artyom Kamardin, Yegor Shtovba and Nikolai Daineko. They were participants in the Mayakovsky Readings, a poetry tradition in Moscow that has existed since 1958.
In September 2022, at the time of the beginning of mobilization in Russia, Artyom Kamardin delivered an anti-war poem at a reading. For this, all three of them paid for it severely – on the same day they were arrested and soon sent to a pre-trial detention center. Artyom Kamardin was brutally tortured by police officers at his home and raped with a dumbbell during his arrest. All of them were recently sentenced to terms of 4 to 7 years in prison.

An input of journalist and former Mayakovsky Readings resident Denni Kulinich who will tell about the case and talk on how the poetic tradition originated in the USSR, continued in Putin’s Russia, and why poets turned out to be enemies of the regime after the war began.
