FROM KAPITAL TO CAPITAL / AN APOLOGY FOR MODERNITY / 4:33 LAIBACH REMAKE

Nur wenige Musik- und Kunstkollektive sind so umfangreich filmisch dokumentiert wie die slowenische Gruppe Laibach, die damit verbundene Bewegung Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK) und das Künstlerkollektiv IRWIN. Und die Quelle erscheint unerschöpflich. Im Mai 2025 freuen wir uns, drei Filme des slowenischen Filmemachers Igor Zupe zu präsentieren, die sich mit der Geschichte, der Methodik und dem kulturellen Einfluss von NSK, IRWIN und Laibach auseinandersetzen.

Anschließend findet ein Filmgespräch mit dem Regisseur Igor Zuppe unter Moderation von Alexander Pehlemann (Zonic) statt.
Die Veranstaltung findet mit freundlicher Unterstützung des Slowenischen Kulturzentrums Berlin – SKICA Berlin statt.

There are only a few music and art collectives that have been documented on film as extensively as the Slovenian group Laibach, the associated movement New Slovenian Art (NSK) and the artists‘ collective IRWIN. And the source seems inexhaustible. In May 2025, we are delighted to present three films by Slovenian filmmaker Igor Zupe that explore the history, methodology and cultural influence of NSK, IRWIN and Laibach.

The screening will be followed by a film discussion with director Igor Zuppe, moderated by Alexander Pehlemann (Zonic).
The event is a cooperation with the Slovenian Cultural Information Center Berlin.

SVN 2017, 52 min, OmeU (Slowenisch mit englischen Untertiteln)

Der Filmt erzählt von einer berüchtigten künstlerischen Intervention der NSK-Grafikabteilung Novi Kolektivizm: 1987 reichte die Gruppe ein Plakat für den staatlichen jugoslawischen Wettbewerb zum Tag der Jugend ein. Ihr Beitrag gewann – und offenbarte Ähnlichkeiten zwischen faschistischer und sozialistisch-realistischer Ästhetik, als die Vorlage des Beitrags, ein Bild von einem NS-Regime-unterstützten Künstlers, enthüllt wurde… Die internationale Erstaufführung des Films fällt mit dem 38. Jahrestag der geschilderten Ereignisse zusammen.

FROM KAPITAL TO CAPITAL recounts an infamous artistic intervention by the NSK graphic design department Novi Kolektivizm: in 1987, the group submitted a poster for the state Yugoslavian competition for Youth Day. Their entry won – and opened a Pandora’s box of similarities between fascist and socialist realist aesthetics when the submission’s template, a painting by a Nazi-supported artist, was revealed… The film’s international premiere screening coincides with the 38th anniversary of the events depicted. (Slovenian with English subtitles)

AN APOLOGY FOR MODERNITY

Eine Dokumentation über den allerersten Pavillon des NSK, State in Time, auf der Biennale von Venedig, mit dem NSK Fragen des Nationalstaats, Grenzen und Identität erforscht. Kommissare, Kuratoren, Künstler, Delegierte und Besucher des Pavillons stellen sich Fragen nach der Bedeutung des europäischen kulturellen und politischen Erbes, seiner Vergangenheit und Zukunft.

AN APOLOGY FOR MODERNITY (2021, 71 min, Slovenian original version with English subtitles) documents the very first NSK State in Time pavilion at the Venice Biennale, through which NSK explored issues of nation-state, borders and identity. Commissioners, curators, artists, delegates and visitors to the pavilion ask themselves questions about the meaning of European cultural and political heritage, its past and future.

4:33 LAIBACH REMAKE

Der Kurzfilm ist eine Hommage an die bahnbrechende Komposition von John Cage, die Konzeptionen von Musik, Stille und Geräusch neu definiert. Der Track und Film (als offizieller Musikclip) sind Teil des STUMM433-Projekts von Mute Records, das insgesamt 58 Remakes von Künstlern wie Depeche Mode, New Order, Cabaret Voltaire, Michael Gira, Wire, Einstürzende Neubauten, Nitzer Ebb und anderen umfasst. 4:33 Laibach Remake ist auch das erste stumme Musikvideo. Der Erlös wurde an die British Tinnitus Association und die Wohltätigkeitsorganisation Music Minds Matter gespendet.

The short film is a tribute to the groundbreaking composition by John Cage which redefined conceptions of music, silence and noise. The track and film (as official music clip) were commissioned as part of Mute Records’ STUMM433 project featuring 50 remakes by artists such as Depeche Mode, New Order, Michael Gira, Wire, Einstürzende Neubauten, Nitzer Ebb and others. 4:33 Laibach Remake is also the first silent music video. The proceeds were donated to the British Tinnitus Association and Music Minds Matter charities. (without dialogue)
